How to Prepare Print-Ready Sticker & Label Artwork (Resolution, Bleed & Cutline Guide)
Learn how to set up vector curves, 300+ DPI resolution, 2mm bleed zones, and digital cutlines. Discover why sending artwork via WhatsApp Document prevents image compression.
Vector Files vs. High-Resolution Raster Graphics
Print quality begins with your source digital artwork. Digital contour knife cutters follow mathematical vector curves to cut your stickers with sub-millimeter precision.
Whenever possible, supply your design in native vector formats:
- Vector Formats (Preferred): Adobe Illustrator (.AI), CorelDRAW (.CDR), Vector PDF, Encapsulated PostScript (.EPS), and Scalable Vector Graphics (.SVG). Ensure all typography is converted to outlines/curves.
- Raster Formats (Accepted): Photoshop (.PSD), Transparent PNG, TIFF, or high-quality JPEG. Raster graphics must be saved at a minimum of 300 DPI (Dots Per Inch) at 100% final physical print dimensions.
Why You Must Send Files via WhatsApp "Document" Option
When you share an image on WhatsApp using the default Photo Gallery option, WhatsApp automatically recompresses your file, downscaling the resolution to 72 DPI and introducing noticeable JPEG compression artifacts.
Always attach your artwork using the Document option on WhatsApp (+91 84014 91173). Sending as a Document transfers the original raw binary file without any loss in clarity, ensuring razor-sharp typography on your finished stickers.
The 2mm Bleed & Safe Zone Rules Explained
Mechanical high-speed digital cutting blades operate with extreme precision, but slight paper movements during high-speed feed runs are inevitable. Pre-press designers follow the 2mm Bleed Rule to prevent white border defects:
- The Cutline (Die Line): The exact path where the digital knife blade cuts through the vinyl or paper.
- The 2mm Bleed (Outer Margin): All background colors, patterns, and full-bleed graphics must extend at least 2mm outside the cutline. If the cut blade shifts by 0.5mm, it cuts into background color instead of leaving an unwanted white paper edge.
- The 2mm Safe Zone (Inner Margin): All essential text, telephone numbers, barcodes, and logos must remain at least 2mm inside the cutline so they are never clipped.
| Artwork Element | Required Specification | Why It Matters | Pre-Press Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 300+ DPI at 100% size | Prevents fuzzy edges and pixelated text | Do not enlarge small web screenshots |
| Bleed Margin | 2.0 mm outside cutline | Prevents white unprinted borders on die cuts | Extend solid background colors past cutline |
| Safe Inner Margin | 2.0 mm inside cutline | Ensures text and logos are never clipped | Center vital branding well away from edges |
| Font Handling | Convert all text to Outlines/Curves | Prevents missing font substitutions | In Illustrator: Type > Create Outlines (Ctrl+Shift+O) |
